September is National Cholesterol Education Month!

National Cholesterol Education Month

Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your chances of getting coronary heart disease. More than 65 million Americans have high blood cholesterol. By itself, the condition usually has no signs or symptoms, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol level is too high. This month, take time to get your blood cholesterol checked, and talk to your doctor about your other modifiable risk factors for heart disease. You can control your risk for heart disease up to 82% just by living a healthy lifestyle.

First Ladies Red Dress Collection Exhibit

First Ladies Red Dress Collection

From October 1, 2010 through August 14, 2011, an expanded installment of The Heart Truth® First Ladies Red Dress Collection was featured at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. The exhibit featured red gowns and suits worn by 13 of America’s First Ladies, including Heart Truth Founding Ambassador Laura Bush’s famous Oscar de la Renta gown and a special showing of one of Jacqueline Kennedy’s favorite Oleg Cassini dresses. In addition, the exhibit featured 12 red designer dresses worn by celebrities in The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Fashion Shows. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum partnered with the Texas A&M Health Science Center to host educational stations around the exhibit about heart – related issues such as high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and healthy lifestyles. Additionally, the Library and Museum hosted heart health screenings, The Heart Truth Champions Training, and issue forums to educate people about their risk for heart disease. The Heart Truth® is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Designed to warn women of their #1 health threat, The Heart Truth® created and introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women. The Red Dress® reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, and inspires them to take action. The NHLBI continues to lead the nation in a landmark heart health awareness movement that is being embraced by millions who share the common goal of greater awareness and better heart health for all women.

The Heart Truth® partners include: The Office on Women's Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other organizations committed to the health and well-being of women. To learn more, visit http://www.hearttruth.gov.
